Turn Off Cruise Control

Many drivers think that using cruise control in the rain is a great way to stay steady, but this isn’t the truth. Cruise control makes it easier to hydroplane, removing control of your vehicle when you need it most. You’ll find it harder to straighten out your vehicle if you start to slip up, so we recommend you do not use the cruise control system while on the road in a storm.

Don’t Tailgate Other Drivers

You shouldn’t tailgate any way, but definitely not during storms and rain. It takes brakes double their normal time to react and activate in the rain, so that means you should put double the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. If someone is tailgating you, the best thing you can do is let them pass however you can.

Get in the Back Seat if There’s Hail

This is a situational thing, but if you’re driving in a storm and it starts to hail, you should immediately pull over and get into the back seat area. We recommend getting on the floor and using the seats as cover. This will provide the best protection if the glass shatters from larger pieces.
