What to Do When You Spot a Tornado While on the Road

Tornado Safety on the Road

March is the kickoff month for tornado season, and unfortunately, it arrived right on schedule with the series of storms that recently ripped through Alabama. We thought that we would take a moment to share some tips on how to stay safe on the road when storm systems that could produce tornadoes hit the area.

Tip #1: Keep an Eye on the Weather Forecast

Before you leave home or work, it is best to check the latest weather forecast via radio, television, or the internet. If your used vehicle that you purchased from our dealership is outfitted with an infotainment system, it should be able to share the latest forecasts as well. If there are warnings, stay where you are and seek shelter in a designated location.

Tip #2: Pull Into a Place That Offers Adequate Shelter

If you happen to be driving around town when the radio station interrupts your favorite song to issue a tornado warning in your immediate area, the best thing that you can do is park your vehicle (in a designated spot, of course) and seek shelter in a local business. A gas station, restaurant, or bank will be just fine.

Tip #3: Finding Shelter on the Open Highway

If you are on a road trip in the middle of nowhere without nearby shelter, your safety options are limited. Continue to listen for the latest weather warnings. When you see a tornado, do not try to outrun it. Observe and determine its path before you continue driving. Keep in mind that a tornado can be extremely unpredictable and change directions without warning. In a worst-case scenario, pull over and seek shelter in a ditch or culvert far away from your vehicle. Get down and cover your head and neck. Never seek shelter under an overpass.
